About Muv-luv universe's spinoffs, sidestories, and tie-ins.

From here on out I will talk about the spinoffs, sidestories, and tie-ins of the Muv-luv universe that make it so expansive. The nature of some of these spinoffs will lead to spoilers.


Muv-luv Alternative: Total Eclipse
Originally a light novel, then adpated into a manga, then an anime, and an upcoming visual novel. With so much material, it's easy to see how TE would spark interest in the Muv-luv universe. This is a spinoff that takes place a few months before the events of Alternative. While it is technically possible to watch this without prior knowledge of Muv-luv, I would not recommend it. There are a few indirect tie-ins from Alternative, but my main concern is the history of the universe as a whole. TE does briefly cover the history but it's not even close compared to the backstory given in Unlimited.

Total Eclipse manga
The first TE manga is 21 chapters and follows the novels closely. It was then cancelled but continued on as a second manga: Total Eclipse Rising, following the anime and adding scenes from the LN that were not animated.

Muv-luv Chronicles
VNs released by age that feature various difference spinoffs.

-The Day After
Building off of the ending events of Unlimited, this vn covers what happens to those that were left behind. A couple of familiar faces also appear. Talks of translating this have begun!

-Chicken Drives
A sidestory about Orbital Divers. English translated version is up on Youtube since it is not very long.

-Rain Dancers
European TSF testing. Not translated.

-Adoration
Sidestory about European Eishi. Not translated but has a detailed article on the Muv-luv wiki.

-Resurrection
A sidestory that includes characters from Alternative and TE. Again, detailed article on the wiki.

-Atonement and Succession
Two stories from fan disks that are closely related to Alternative. Detailed article, etc.

-Confessions
Follows Isumi at Sadogashima and expands more on a bit of her backstory.

Muv-luv Altered Fable
Essentially Extra with characters from Alternative that did not originally appear in Extra. Cannonically this takes place in a separate timeline with no connection to any other story. It is currently being translated.
-Faraway Dawn, a tactical turn based game also comes on the disk.

Haruko Maniax
Features Kashiwagi Haruko during Extra.
-Faraway Dawn 2 comes on the disk.

TSF in Action (TSFIA)
Several different sidestories that focus of events related to TSFs. Includes characters from all over the Muv-luv universe.
-The Euro Front is a subdivision of TSFIA.

Schwarzesmarken
A light novel about Eishi in Eastern Germany. English translation is available for the first volume.
Ayu-Mayu Gekijou
A web comedy featuring characters and parodies from age works. Subtitles avaliable.

Ayu-Mayu Alternative
A fandisk vn, it seems to take place during Alternative. A comedy about robots and shounen anime.

Tie-ins from other age works:
It's not secret that age likes to have cameos in their vns, here I'll list what character appears in what vn and some other neat trivia.

-Kimiga Ita Kisetsu
Isumi Michiru, Kazama Touko, Munakata Misae. Takes place in the same city as Extra.

-Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Hayase Mitsuki, Suzumiya Haruka, Suzumiya Akane. Takes place in the same city as Extra.

-Akane Maniax
Features Akane interacting with characters in Extra.

-Owarinaki Natsu, Towa Naru Shirabe
Has a more suble tie-in to the Muv-luv universe - it takes place several years before Alternative and characters late make cameos in The Day After.
